Nathan Lane Says He Was ‘Too Gay’ For Role In Space Jam

Nathan Lane has opened about his experience with casting for the 1996 film Space Jam revealing he was considered “too gay to play the part.”

Lane discussed the role in a recent interview with Vanity Fair about the known film he ultimately missed out on.

Openly gay actor Nathan Lane has certainly cemented himself as one of the most identifiable actors in Hollywood.

He has played some of the most remembered roles in film and television history, including his role as Timon in the The Lion King.

However few can forget the his iconic performance in The Birdcage alongside Robin Williams.

Safe to say Road has amassed a career that spans decades across countless diverse roles whilst still staying true to himself, however one role it seems wasn’t too be.

In an interview with Vanity Fair he alleges that Space Jam director Joe Pytka saw him presenting the Tony Awards and “thought that suggested I was too lgbtq+ to play the part” he recalled.

“I was not prepared at all for that,” Lane said about openly discussing his sexuality at the time. “And I certainly wasn’t ready to depart from table-to-table and tell them all I was male lover. I just wanted to talk about finally [getting] a big part in a movie, and I didn’t need to make it about my sexuality.”

Shortly after appearing on our screens in Geordie Shore series 10 endorse in 2015, Nathan Henry came out as gay after previously living in front of the show’s cameras as a double attraction man.

But it’s now been revealed that Nathan came out to his parents as gay when he was a teenager, around five years before he appeared on the MTV reality show.

Nathan, now 29, actually lied to producers about his sexuality because he thought that he wouldn’t be accepted onto the demonstrate if he told them he only dated men.

He told OK!, “Obviously I was gay but I didn’t want to say people that because I didn’t think I’d get picked and I thought it would influence my career. I thought it would stop be getting on the show.”
