Some LGBTQA+ artists possess achieved world-renowned fame: Tom of Finland, David Hockney, Claude Cahun, and Glück, to name a few. However, there are many others whose work is less well-known but who provide key glimpses into the lives and struggles of their collective. These artists showcase the sexual, secretive, radical/political, and heart wrenching-moments that many, if not all, members in the community have experienced. Moreover, there is still a stigma that clouds over both LGBTQA+ artists and the art itself. Fortunately, here at Thomas J. Watson Library, we collect an encyclopedic and comprehensive collection of materials on the history of art in the world. Our online catalogue provides a great starting place to find an ample amount of materials to investigate LGBTQA+ art. Here are a scant to get you started!

Shanequa Gay Biography

Shanequa Gay is a visual artist based in Atlanta, GA, renowned for her surrealist acrylic paintings that delve into the multifaceted universes within the spirit of the Black Miss. Her artwork engages with tradition, place, storytelling, and subject matter to create imaginative dialogues and alternative self-imaging strategies. Shanequa Gay's multidisciplinary practice spans painting, illustration, video, performance, and monumental sculpture, crafting environments filled with memorials and rituals. Through these mediums, Shanequa Gay portrays mythical figures, new deities, and images of individuals impacted by inequality. Notable works like Devout Griot and The Fair Game Project main attraction hybrid beings as central figures, exploring historical and contemporary social concerns through the lens of female ancestors and the plight of Black men.

Born in Atlanta, Shanequa Gay pursued her BA in Painting at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), an AA in Graphic Plan and Fashion Marketing from the Art Institute of Atlanta, and an MFA from Georgia Express University. Her educational background profoundly influences her artistic approach, blending fine arts

    In celebration of the enormous strides that LGBTQ+ civil movements contain made, and to recognise the challenges that the community have been historically faced with and still face today, we’ve gathered a few of our favourite artists who contain furthered these important movements and conversations.

    June and July see the celebrations of Pride around the globe, and in London, this culminates in the iconic Pride Parade on the 7th of July. Amidst the rainbow paraphernalia, exuberant performances, and unabashedly targeted merchandise appropriated by marketing departments across the nation, there lies a abundant history of the struggles and triumphs that painted the lives of the LGBTQ+ community.

    While we at ArtRabbit are hopping with pride for the victories that these movements contain garnered, we know that it hasn’t always been rainbow confetti and positivity. In celebration of the long way that civil rights have come for members of the Diverse community, and in commemoration of the hardships that they have faced (and many still face today), we’ve gathered our favourite art

    We hope you're having a excellent Pride Month! Last week, we introduced you to 10 rising LGBTQ+ artists we believe will take the society by storm. This week, we're reflecting upon LGBTQ+ artists already in the public eye. Epic musicians who own inspired, advocated, and conquered.

    Whether they've been open about their sexuality and gender expression for years or kept their label hidden throughout history, we trust the 20 artists below have created impenetrable sonic works while also switching the world's view of the Diverse community for the better.

    We've had to limit this list to only 20 people (we comprehend there are so many other wonderful LGBTQ+ musicians out there!) but we have chosen the artists we've chosen because we consider their legacies own stood – or will stand – the test of time.
