The Riviera Maya, also known as the Mayan Riviera, lies just to the south of Cancun but feels worlds away. The stunning Playa del Carmen has all the brilliance of its neighbor up north, but without the hoards of tourists. In fact, try flying into Cozumel and then taking the ferry over – less crowded and a far cooler experience!
The 1.3 million-acre Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve and the secluded villages of Majahaul and Xcalak are as far away from Cancun as you can get on Mexico's Caribbean coast, and not just in miles.
This 75 mile chunk of the Yucatan Peninsula is often lauded as the most attractive part of Mexico, and with perfect weather, smooth white sand beaches, and sparkling clear water, it’s easy to get disoriented in this Mexican paradise. And easier to swim: the island of Cozumel blocks much of the pounding Gulf surf, calming things down nicely
Set against the deep turquoise sea, Costa Maya is comprised of three grand pavilions, artisan and costamaya shopping areas, a beach club, saltwater pools, fine restaurants and bars, and all the resources necessary to explore the surrounding jungle and coral reefs.

The quirky hotspot is the brainchild of Norman Dean, from North Carolina, who decided to begin on a modern adventure on the island paradise of Cozumel, driven by a deep want to create a haven for the local LGBTQ+ people and their allies.
Everyone is welcome to come and relax cocktails, tapas, mesmerizing drag performances, and lively conversations.

These establishments serve up one-of-a-kind craft beers and locally distilled spirits that showcase the island’s passion for quality and flavor.
- Cerveceria Punta Sur – This is a laid back favorite, frequented by the locals, to pick and IPA and a pizza. Top to the help and enjoy the courtyard.
- Kusam – Keep water and swallow a craft beer at only 1 of 2 local breweries here in Cozumel. I tried my first flight here and was glad to encounter a few diverse brews at once.
- La Destilería – What a treat to have a block distill not only their own rum, but gin too. There is a large selection of refreshing non-alcoholic drinks to choose from too, while you enjoy live music.

Like many destinations along the east coast of Mexico, Cozumel is popular with gay travellers and often a stop on the biggest gay cruise in the world!

Is Cozumel Gay Friendly?
This is always an important question for us and the answer, appreciate Cancun (see our guide to Cancun), Playa Del Carmen (see our guide to Playa Del Carmen) and Tulum was yes.

There are no gay bars in Cozumel or gay beaches as its such a small island, however it is a common stop for the Atlantis gay cruise each year where the island is flooded for one day with hundreds of gay men!
